The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow Preparing Young Women for the Future

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF

DELTA ACADEMY

A major goal of the Delta Academy is to prepare female students with a basic education in math, science and technology because knowledge in these areas is necessary in our rapidly changing, technologically complex world.  Activities for the Academy focus on scholarship, service, and sisterhood.

DATES AND TIMES

Sessions will be held on various Saturday’s of each month at a location which is to be determined.  Sessions will occur from 9:00a.m. to 12 noon (lunch will be provided).

CRITERIA FOR SELECTING

YOUNG WOMEN PARTICIPANTS

The Academy is designed to offer opportunities to young girls, ages 11-14 who might otherwise be excluded because they lack the financial resources to gain access to math, science, leadership and technology experiences.  The Delta Academy recognizes the disadvantages many young girls in various communities face because of gender, income, age and parental resources, despite the personal potential of the girls themselves.  A primary goal of the Academy is to prepare these young women for full participation in the 21st century world.

1.        All participants must be girls.

2.        Girls must be no younger than 11 years old and no older than 14 years old as of their most recent birthday.  This program is designed for the period of early to mid-adolescence and focuses on middle school.

3.        Girls and their parent/guardian must complete a Delta Academy application in order to be eligible to participate in the program.

4.        Girls must be willing to commit to a minimum of 3 hours per month to participate in Delta Academy (there is no cost to participate in the program).
